Back-to-School Season Is Peaking. Here's What's Actually Worth Buying This Week vs. Waiting On.

We already mapped the full back-to-school pricing timeline a few weeks back — when electronics, backpacks, and supplies each hit their best window. That's still useful, but it doesn't answer the question that actually matters right now, in peak week, with school starting in most areas within the next two to three weeks: given where you are today, what should you buy this week, and what can genuinely still wait?
Here's the real call.
Buy This Week: Anything Required, Sized, or Personalized
Uniforms. If your school requires them, this is the one category where "wait for a better price" isn't a real option. Uniforms sell out by size well before the price drops meaningfully, and a specific size in a specific style not being available on day one of school is a much bigger problem than paying full price for it now. Buy the required sizes this week even if it feels early.
Teacher-issued supply lists. If a specific classroom list has gone out — the exact brand of folder, the specific calculator model, a particular art kit — buy it this week. These lists reference exact SKUs sometimes, and the specific item can sell out locally even while the generic version of it stays in stock and cheap. Don't substitute and hope; buy the actual item on the list now.
Anything sized for a kid who's still growing. Shoes, uniforms, and fitted clothing bought too early risk not fitting by the first day, but bought too late risk not being available in the needed size at all. This week is close enough to school start that sizing is reasonably locked in, and still early enough that most sizes are in stock. That combination doesn't last long once school actually starts.
Genuinely Fine to Wait
Generic school supplies. Paper, pens, basic folders, notebooks — this is exactly the category our timeline post flagged as cheapest in the final week or two before school starts, and that's still true. No urgency here. These are also the first things to go on real clearance the moment school starts, for anyone whose local supply list turns out to be lighter than they stocked for.
Electronics, if you missed the early window. The best BTS electronics pricing already happened. If you didn't buy a laptop or tablet in the early window, this week's pricing on that category is not meaningfully better than what's coming — and there's a real chance you'll see comparable or better pricing once Labor Day sales start layering on top of BTS clearance in a few weeks. Unless you need it functioning on day one, this is a genuine wait.
Backpacks, if you're not picky about the style. Popular styles sell out rather than get discounted further, so if there's a specific bag your kid wants, that's a buy-now call. But if any reasonably good backpack will do, prices on the remaining stock only get better as the season winds down.
The Actual Filter
The question worth asking about anything on your list this week isn't "is this the cheapest it'll get" — for a lot of categories, it isn't, and that's fine. The question is "does waiting risk this specific item not being available at all." Required, sized, and personalized items fail that test and should get bought now. Generic, substitutable, always-restocked items pass it easily and should wait.
